Most people choose to leave their legacy to a good cause close to their heart. Your legacy could support any number of good causes.
John left a legacy with the Foundation to provide bursaries to enable students at the St Hild & St Bede College Durham University to further their studies or undertake activities in relation to their study. John's family is actively involved in deciding who receives support from the fund and they work closely with the University and the Foundation to find suitable candidates for support.

County
Durham Foundation Board Member Bernard Robinson has recently set up a residual
legacy to help support future generations of local people. Bernard’s
estate will help the Foundation continue to improve the lives of people in
County Durham and Darlington.
Educated in Darlington and Bishop Auckland, Bernard spent many years at TKA
Tallent Chassis in various positions including Executive Chairman. He has
always been committed to the local community and is an active member of our
board. Bernard received his OBE in 1988 and is a former North East Businessman
of the Year.
Bernard has this to say about the Foundation “County Durham Foundation
has developed into a most successful and highly respected community foundation.
This has been made possible by the tireless dedication of our board members
and staff.”
Close Thornton Solicitors recently administered the will of Francis Bell, who left a legacy to support Diabetic Research at Darlington Memorial Hospital.
As the hospital was unable to manage the fund, Close Thornton went in search
of the charity that could best support Francis' wishes and chose County Durham
Foundation.
Blackett Hart & Pratt were contacted by a client 'Miss M' and asked to prepare a will. Her intention was to leave a residual legacy to assist with specialist medical training, for the benefit of the greater community. Blackett Hart & Pratt chose County Durham Foundation as the best people to maximise her support to the next generation of medical students. As Miss M’s father is a retired GP, she is committed to helping those within the medical community.
This legacy will be styled the John A S Metcalf Memorial and specifically
help post graduate medial students to further their training in neurosurgery.
Training to be a neurosurgeon is a lengthy process involving many years of
specialist training. Their daily work involves dealing with a variety of illnesses
from those that threaten life and limb to those that cause chronic pain. The
support of people like 'Miss M' is an important boost to the development of
our regions’ surgeons.
Ethel left a legacy with the Foundation for a cause extremely close to her heart. Ethel's grandson Andrew, who was a haemophiliac, sadly died at a young age after contracting HIV through an infected blood transfusion. The Andrew Atkinson Trust provides bursaries and learning experiences for students at the haematology department of a local hospital.
